St. Louis: A Market Ready for Discovery

BioGenerator, the startup arm of BioSTL, helps turn St. Louis’ scientific strength into investable companies.

Since 2004, BioGenerator has invested $53 million in 144 St. Louis startups–primarily at the pre-seed and seed stages. These companies have gone on to raise $3.1 billion from more than 200 investors around the world, 23 companies have been acquired or gone public, with 81 companies active in the portfolio. 

Ninety-three percent of BioGenerator-backed companies remain headquartered in St. Louis, creating jobs and long-term economic value. BioGenerator’s nonprofit approach has combined $32 million in charitable contributions with $21 million in returns reinvested to fund successive generations of startups.

Our model goes beyond capital. BioGenerator creates and builds companies, develops entrepreneurial talent, and provides the specialized infrastructure needed to launch life-science businesses. Our Entrepreneurs-in-Residence Program brings seasoned executive leadership to company creation and founder mentorship, while our Venture Fellows Program contributes emerging scientific talent to build new companies and evaluate startup opportunities.

Our new Hypha Life Sciences Venture Studio expands these company-formation efforts by providing the hands-on support and capital to build companies from the ground up. With a focus on research tools and services—the ‘picks and shovels’ of life science—they can reach market faster than regulated products, accelerate returns, and create more local jobs.

Considered a pioneer of the shared lab model,  we operate them in the region’s two major life-science innovation districts: BioGenerator Labs in the Cortex Innovation District for human health and the Helix Center at 39 North for agtech. Together, these facilities have supported more than 200 startups with affordable laboratories, offices, shared equipment, and a community of fellow entrepreneurs. 

Successful companies including CoverCress, acquired by Bayer; Canopy Biosciences, acquired by Bruker; and innovators such as Allotera and Geneoscopy demonstrate both the breadth and quality of companies emerging from the region. They also reflect something larger: that St. Louis has developed a repeatable system for transforming research into venture-backable businesses.

The next chapter for St. Louis is about scale. The deal flow continues to grow. And the region’s foundation for innovation and the quality of science has never been stronger, emerging from local leaders, including Washington University who conducts more than $1 billion in annual human health research and the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, the world’s largest independent nonprofit dedicated to plant science.
